February 12, 2012 is the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany. The collect (pronounced ′kä-lekt) is a prayer that gathers us as a people by helping us to focus on major themes presented in the scripture readings for this coming Sunday:

God of the outstretched hand, in Christ you are moved with anger and pity at a world which labels and rejects its children: release us from the lie that we are born unclean and shape a new community where all may be accepted; through Jesus Christ, the companion of lepers. Amen.

The season following Christmas is Epiphany, which begins with the Feast of Epiphany on January 6. The Feast of Epiphany commemorates the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus.

Epiphany comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, derived from the verb “to appear.” It means “appearance” or “manifestation.” In classical Greek, this word was used at the appearance of dawn, of an enemy in war, or of a manifestation of a divine being.

In the Episcopal Church, the season of Epiphany is a time to reflect on Jesus’ birth and baptism, his life as a young boy, and the blossoming of his ministries as a young man. The Epiphany Season continues until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

Next in our Episcopal Church Calendar

The season following Epiphany is Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday (February 22, 2012).

Lord of fierce compassion, you name the forces of death in our hearts and institutions and even in the holy places: lift from us the canopy of fear that feeds on repression and pushes away what it cannot abide; go with us to dark and lonely places where we can learn again who we are called to be; through Jesus Christ, the healer of creation. Amen.

January 8, 2012 is the First Sunday of the season of Epiphany. The collect (pronounced ′kä-lekt) is a prayer that gathers us as a people by helping us to focus on major themes presented in the scripture readings for this coming Sunday:

Blessed are you, Lord our God, you have created the heavens and the earth. Blessed are you, Jesus Christ, you came among us and were baptized by John. Blessed are you, Holy life-giving Spirit, you descend as the dove and you fill us with life. Blessed are you, Holy three. In you we live and more and have our being. Amen.

Where we are in our Episcopal Church Calendar

Advent is the first season of the church year, beginning with the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continuing through the day before Christmas. The name is derived from a Latin word for “coming.” The season is a time of preparation and expectation for the coming celebration of Christ’s birth and a time to reflect on the perpetual coming of Christ into our midst.

This week at New Song

December 11, 2011 is the second Sunday of Advent. The collect (pronounced ′kä-lekt) is a prayer that gathers us as a people by helping us to focus on major themes presented in the scripture readings for this coming Sunday:

Lord of light, who sent the Baptist to offer hope and face the world’s scorn: open our ears to hear the cries from the margins, exposing our fears, inciting our vision and calling us to a step of faith; through Jesus Christ, the one who is to come. Amen.

Where we are in our Episcopal Church Calendar

Advent is the first season of the church year, beginning with the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continuing through the day before Christmas. The name is derived from a Latin word for “coming.” The season is a time of preparation and expectation for the coming celebration of Christ’s birth and a time to reflect on the perpetual coming of Christ into our midst.

Next in our Episcopal Church Calendar

The season following Advent is Christmas. Christmas Day is one of the seven principal feasts. The Christmas season lasts twelve days, from Christmas Day until Jan. 5, the day before the Epiphany. This year, the Christmas season includes Christmas Day and the First Sunday after Christmas Day (the Holy Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ).
