Spiritual practice is what we do when we pray, gather in the name of God, or seek the divine in any way in our lives.
We are transformed by God’s presence with and within us. Spiritual practice helps prepare us for that transformation, allowing us to be open to the Divine. We call it “practice” because getting ready to be with God take preparation and daily practice. In our world of distractions and fast-paced lifestyles, the simple discipline of a daily spiritual practice can help calm our minds, bodies, and spirits so that we might have room for God.
The ancient Greek word, kenosis, means “emptiness” or “self-emptying.” It is often used to describe the spiritual practice Jesus followed, a practice that allowed him to pour himself out to make room for God.
In our spiritual practices, we can make room for God in many ways.
- Quieting, or emptying, our minds can make room for prayer.
- Reading God’s word can help open our hearts to new perspectives.
- Serving others in need can make room for the love and compassion that will make this a better world in which to live.
