This week at New Song
January 15, 2012 is the Second Sunday after Epiphany. The collect (pronounced ′kä-lekt) is a prayer that gathers us as a people by helping us to focus on major themes presented in the scripture readings for this coming Sunday:
Lord, as you called the disciples, open our ears to your calling, open our eyes to your presence, open our hearts to your love, that we may hear you, and hearing you may love you, and loving you may serve you, whom to serve is perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ, the lamb of God. Amen.

Where we are in our Episcopal Church Calendar
The season following Christmas is Epiphany, which begins with the Feast of Epiphany on January 6. The Feast of Epiphany commemorates the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus.
Epiphany comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, derived from the verb “to appear.” It means “appearance” or “manifestation.” In classical Greek, this word was used at the appearance of dawn, of an enemy in war, or of a manifestation of a divine being.
In the Episcopal Church, the season of Epiphany is a time to reflect on Jesus’ birth and baptism, his life as a young boy, and the blossoming of his ministries as a young man. The Epiphany Season continues until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
