January 8, 2012

This week at New Song

January 8, 2012 is the First Sunday of the season of Epiphany. The collect (pronounced ′kä-lekt) is a prayer that gathers us as a people by helping us to focus on major themes presented in the scripture readings for this coming Sunday:

Blessed are you, Lord our God, you have created the heavens and the earth. Blessed are you, Jesus Christ, you came among us and were baptized by John. Blessed are you, Holy life-giving Spirit, you descend as the dove and you fill us with life. Blessed are you, Holy three. In you we live and more and have our being. Amen.
(from Traces of Glory by David Adam)

Where we are in our Episcopal Church Calendar

The season following Christmas is Epiphany, which begins with the Feast of Epiphany on January 6. The Feast of Epiphany commemorates the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus.

Epiphany comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, derived from the verb “to appear.” It means “appearance” or “manifestation.” In classical Greek, this word was used at the appearance of dawn, of an enemy in war, or of a manifestation of a divine being.

In the Episcopal Church, the season of Epiphany is a time to reflect on Jesus’ birth and baptism, his life as a young boy, and the blossoming of his ministries as a young man. The Epiphany Season continues until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

The season following Epiphany is Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday (February 22, 2012).
