January 1, 2012

This week at New Song

January 1, 2012 is The Feast of the Holy Name. This is the day upon which the infant Jesus was named. The collect (pronounced ′kä-lekt) is a prayer that gathers us as a people by helping us to focus on major themes presented in the scripture readings for this coming Sunday:

Lord, give joy to the world: joy in our hearts, joy in our homes.  Let the joy of God be known among us.  For your love revealed in your manger birth, we join with the shepherds to glorify and praise you; through him who came to live among us, Jesus Christ our lord, who lives with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever.  Amen.
( from Traces of Glory by David Adam)

The second season of the church year, following Advent, is Christmas. Christmas Day is one of the seven principal feasts. The Christmas season lasts twelve days, from Christmas Day until Jan. 5, the day before the Epiphany. This year, the Christmas season includes Christmas Day and the First Sunday after Christmas Day (the Holy Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ).
