This week at New Song

December 18, 2011 is the second Sunday of Advent. The collect (pronounced ′kä-lekt) is a prayer that gathers us as a people by helping us to focus on major themes presented in the scripture readings for this coming Sunday:

God of impossible love, you needed Mary to give consent, to bear the scandal, to carry your word within herself: may her courage give hope to women and men who yearn to sing new songs of justice and find the world a dwelling place for God; through Jesus Christ, the one who is to come.  Amen.

Where we are in our Episcopal Church Calendar

Advent is the first season of the church year, beginning with the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continuing through the day before Christmas. The name is derived from a Latin word for “coming.” The season is a time of preparation and expectation for the coming celebration of Christ’s birth and a time to reflect on the perpetual coming of Christ into our midst.

The season following Advent is Christmas. Christmas Day is one of the seven principal feasts. The Christmas season lasts twelve days, from Christmas Day until Jan. 5, the day before the Epiphany. This year, the Christmas season includes Christmas Day and the First Sunday after Christmas Day (the Holy Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ).
